Educational Resources

The Florida League of Cities (FLC) has developed a multi-faceted Citizenship Education Program with the goal of increasing all Floridians' understanding of city governments and the services they provide.

The Citizenship Education Program includes the following materials:

1. Florida City & County Government, A Teacher Handbook, a Florida Department of Education copyrighted Florida-specific curriculum on city and county governments. The curriculum is appropriate for use in history, geography, math, law, government, science, and language arts classes, among others. A teacher handbook has been distributed to each public secondary school in Florida and to private secondary schools on a request basis.

2. The ABCs of City Government, an educational supplement for elementary teachers, grades 2-5, to help introduce city government to their students.

3. My City - I'm Part of It, I'm Proud of It, an educational guide that enables teachers and students to experience firsthand how city governments operate by holding a mock city election, participating in a mock city council meeting and solving a city-related problem. This publication is currently being revised and will be available in May.

4. The publication, Youth...The Key to Quality Cities, a compilation of city-school partnership programs and youth programs. Copies are available by contacting the Florida League of Cities.

5. City Videotape Library - This library includes City Educational Programs and City Profiles on videotape, which are available to public schools through the local school district's ITV (media) Office through an agreement with the Florida Department of Education.

6. Florida League of Cities Web Site - Check out our Web site at www.flcities.com and learn more about other services and programs offered by the League.

In addition, the Florida League of Cities sponsors Florida City Government Week, an annual event that serves to highlight the crucial role played by city government in the lives of citizens. Many cities and schools host events to celebrate the week. If you would like to receive a Florida City Government Week planning packet, contact the Florida League of Cities.
